Bull Buying - It's Serious Business

Adding genetics to a program is something Ranchers and Farmers consider seriously, no matter what species they raise. Buying new sires is an easy, awesome way to vastly improve your program's genetics, with minimal changes to the program. We strive to add in some fabulous genetics yearly, keeping it fresh and keeping our gene pool diverse, while keeping strong phenotype with the goals of calves that are as uniform as possible. Raising Black Baldys, we have to keep in mind that some years we need to add more Angus to the mix, and some years, more Hereford. This year, we needed the Angus, so we went to the North West Wyoming Angus Association's annual sale.

This is a small sale, with the 2020 sale offering 61 yearling bulls. We like this sale because these are top quality, small batch producers that know their stuff! They know their stock like any dedicated stockman should, and they take immense pride in their bulls. This sale included 8 producers including: Blue Sky Cattle, Davidson Angus, Hogg's Angus, JOH Ranch, Three 7's Ranch, Obsidian Angus, Wagler Angus and Walking W Angus. These cattle are all range raised in environments similar to ours, without sacrificing phenotype, EPD's or quality! Our goals with this year's purchase was to purchase strong phenotype bulls with reasonable birth weights and exceptional wean weights. Specifically focusing on upping the percentage of dam's weight weaned.

We ended up purchasing 3 yearling bulls from Obsidian Angus. We have purchased from the Thomas' before and have been super impressed! Not only do these bulls boast the strong qualities we are looking for, they are extremely calving ease friendly while maintaining a decent birth weight. Yet our strongest draw to Obsidian Angus is temperament. These bulls are not just gentle, they are easy to work in corrals or in the pasture. You can work them on foot, with dogs, or horseback! These are the bulls you don't need to watch your back around, because if anything, they might want a scratch! These three young studs show a lot of promise, and bring a lot to our program and we cannot thank the Thomas' enough for bringing such impressive stock to this sale.

The numbers on these bad boys are below, and man they are impressive!

Thanks to the NWWAA for putting on an amazing quality sale, and to Fred Thomas for the use of his photos! Be sure to find the NWWAA on facebook and follow along!
