Our Commitment to Stewardship

At Brewster Ranch, stewardship is more than just a philosophy—it’s a responsibility we take seriously. As ranchers, we understand that the health of our land directly impacts the quality of life for our livestock and the sustainability of our operation. We are committed to making thoughtful, long-term decisions that support both the environment and the animals we raise.

A New Chapter: Evolving Stewardship Practices

With Mark and Kate recently taking over the ranch, we are in a period of transition and growth. While Brewster Ranch has always been built on strong stewardship values, we are taking the opportunity to refine and improve our practices to ensure the long-term health of both our land and livestock. This includes reassessing grazing strategies, water management, and livestock selection to better align with our vision for a resilient and sustainable future. We are committed to preserving the traditions that have made Brewster Ranch successful while incorporating new methods that enhance efficiency and sustainability.

Sustainable Grazing & Rangeland Management

A key focus of our stewardship efforts is responsible grazing management. We carefully monitor range conditions and are working to implement additional cross-fencing to support rotational grazing. This practice allows pastures time to recover, encourages healthier forage growth, and helps prevent erosion. By managing our grazing pressure effectively, we are not only maintaining the productivity of our range but also enhancing biodiversity and soil health.

Low-Input Livestock Management

We raise livestock that can thrive in our environment with minimal intervention. Our cattle and goats are selected for their ability to perform well on native forage, reducing the need for supplemental feed and excessive inputs. Strong maternal instincts, natural disease resistance, and efficient foraging ability are key traits in our breeding decisions. This low-input approach helps us maintain a balanced ecosystem while ensuring our livestock remain hardy and self-sufficient.

Looking Toward the Future

As we continue this transition, we are committed to making decisions that will benefit the ranch for years to come. We are evaluating ways to improve our efficiency, enhance our grazing systems, and ensure that our livestock and land remain healthy and productive. With a deep respect for the land and a focus on long-term sustainability, we are excited to continue growing Brewster Ranch in a way that honors its legacy while embracing the future.

Exploring Organic Certification

As part of our ongoing efforts to refine and improve our stewardship practices, we are also considering the transition to organic certification. While many of our practices already align with regenerative and organic principles, we are exploring what it would take to meet formal certification standards and how it could further support our sustainability goals.

At Brewster Ranch, stewardship is not just about preserving what we have—it’s about building a stronger, healthier future for both our land and our livestock. We are excited about the changes ahead and remain dedicated to responsible ranching practices that ensure our operation thrives for generations to come.
